STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Moderate and severe cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in male patients could decrease sperm volume and eventually cause infertility, according to a published report by the Jerusalem Post.
Males tested 30 days after a COVID-19 diagnosis showed a 50% reduction in sperm volume, concentration and motility, the Jerusalem Post reported.
Additionally, the virus was found in the sperm of 13% of the patients tested, according to the report.
Dr. Dan Aderka, who conducted the research, told the Jerusalem Post that the infertility could be caused as COVID-19 ties to the ACE2 receptors, eventually destroying the cells.
The research also tested 12 men who died due to complications of the coronavirus and found “moderate to severe changes in the testicular cells supporting sperm development and those producing testosterone," the hormone necessary to trigger “sperm division and multiplication,” according to the report.
