Much of the heavy smoke seen over Loveland and much of Northern Colorado on Friday came from the Mullen Fire burning from Wyoming south into Colorado.

That fire reached 128,738 acres as of 8 p.m. Friday and is 6% contained, according to its incident management webpage.

The Cameron Peak Fire burning northwest of Loveland is at 125,271 acres and is 34% contained.

At the Friday evening Facebook briefing on the Cameron Peak Fire, John Norton-Jensen, operations trainee for Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 6, said the Cameron Peak blaze was putting off some smoke during the day, but most was from the Mullen Fire.

He added that the Williams Fork Fire, a 13,554-acre wildfire west of Denver near Gypsum, also was affecting air quality in the state.

During the Facebook briefing, the public had questions about the proximity of the two wildfires.

Shawn Sheldon, incident commander with the Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 6, said the fires are about 25 miles apart.

He said the incident commanders for both fires are in communication about what the fires are doing and what could be done if they grow nearer to each other.

But he said it’s likely they will remain separate incidents, noting that they have separate causes. The Cameron Peak Fire’s cause is still under investigation, Sheldon noted.

He said weather forecasts call for reduced temperatures in the low 50s to upper 60s in the Cameron Peak area on Saturday with variable wind speeds of 9-10 mph and gusts up to 13 mph.

He expects another “critical wind day” on Monday, with wind gusts of 25-30 mph possible that day and low relative humidity.

After Monday, weather conditions are expected to improve, he said.

Asked when people displaced from their homes will be able to return, he said after the test on Monday, firefighters will have a better idea of the answer.

“I just ask for a little bit more patience,” Sheldon said. “It will happen. We’ll get you going back into your homes.”
