HIGHLAND — After a few snaps, it seemed like déjà vu — Lone Peak defensive linemen crashing into Skyridge’s backfield, one after the other.
Lone Peak racked up five sacks on a single drive — and had eight total — to go along with three interceptions and a fumble recovery on the night for an emphatic 37-20 win over previously undefeated Skyridge on Friday.
“They’re leading out, getting us good turnovers, great possessions,” Lone Peak coach Bart Brockbank said. “You can’t say enough about the defense tonight.”
Lone Peak defensive end John Henry Daley was a tireless nightmare for Skyridge, smothering a Falcons offense that had scored at least 30 points in every game this season.
“He just goes and goes and goes. He’s a great weapon,” Brockbank said. “He never stops when he’s in.”
Skyridge struck first with a crisp, eight-play drive, with McCae Hillstead showing off his accuracy on a 3-yard rollout scoring toss to wide receiver Jack Hadfield.
From there, Lone Peak’s defense clamped down and the Knights offense controlled the ball with long drives to keep possession away from Hillstead. Quarterback Luke Romney led the Knights on a 12-play drive capped with a 39-yard field goal from Benjamin Miller to get Lone Peak on the board, 7-3.
Dual-threat quarterback Jonah Heimuli took over for Romney late in the first quarter to add an element of rushing uncertainty that kept Skyridge’s defense guessing.
“If you can run as a quarterback, it opens up a lot of stuff,” Brockbank said.
On Skyridge’s ensuing drive, Daley pressured Hillstead into an interception thrown to linebacker Gage Easton. Four plays later, running back Luke Durfey rumbled for a 28-yard score to make it 10-7 in the final seconds of the first quarter. Miller added two more field goals to give Lone Peak a 16-7 lead at halftime.
“I never want to quit on a play,” Daley said. “I feel like there’s always a chance that I can make a play, and I want to make sure I do that every time I can.”
Skyridge’s offense looked composed on its first possession of the second half, with Hillstead finding Hadfield again on an arcing 20-yard rainbow toss to bring the score within two.
Hillstead went to the well again with a deep throw to Hadfield after a Lone Peak punt, but safety Takeao Hansen rose high and secured a bobbling, athletic interception in the end zone.
Skyridge running back Jeter Fenton fumbled on the Falcons’ next possession, leading to a 14-yard tough scoring run from Lone Peak running back Jaxson Willits to give the Knights a 23-14 lead with 10:41 left in the game.
Hillstead was hurt on the following drive while diving for a first down, and backup quarterback Kia’i Keone threw a pick to Durfey, who took it the other way for 70 yards and set up a short field for another Willits 4-yard scoring scamper.
A 9-yard passing touchdown from Heimuli to wide receiver Weston Covey capped off Lone Peak’s scoring and sent the Knights into the home stretch of the regular season with momentum in the relentless Region 4.
“We’ve got to enjoy it tonight but we’ve got to get back to work tomorrow,” Brockbank said. “You can’t take a week off and you have to have a short memory.”
