Tornado, severe thunderstorm warnings lifted for Mass., but storm leaves damage, power outages - The Boston Globe

A tornado warning issued for parts of the Cape and a severe thunderstorm warning issued for eastern parts of the state were lifted Saturday evening, forecasters said.

The storm moved offshore by Saturday evening, leaving only a gale warning along the coast in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday, said William Babcock, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Norton.

As of about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, there were no confirmed reports of any tornadoes, Babcock said.

Wind gusts were mostly in the 50 to 60 miles-per-hour range across the state, with the highest recorded at 70 miles per hour in Waquoit Bay just before 6:15 p.m., according to data from the weather service.

The National Weather Service fielded numerous reports of trees and wires down across Massachusetts and Rhode Island, according to its website. In Ashland, lightning struck a tree outside of Ashland Commons on President Row and caused “significant damage to numerous buildings and vehicles,” the Ashland Fire Department tweeted.

The large pine “tree exploded into pieces doing damage to three residential apartment buildings and multiple vehicles in parking lot,” Ashland Fire Chief Keith Robie wrote in an e-mail. Multiple windows were also blown out.

“Miraculously, there were no injuries,” the department tweeted.

About eight to 10 residents were displaced, Robie said, and the Red Cross was notified.

The building commissioner and electrical inspector responded to the scene, he said.

As of about 8:50 p.m., nearly 8,700 customers were without power in Massachusetts, according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. Just after midnight, that number had dropped to 1,552, according to MEMA.

The tornado warning expired at 7 p.m. for south central Barnstable County, according to the National Weather Service. Areas impacted included South Yarmouth, West Yarmouth, and Yarmouth Port, the weather service in Norton tweeted.

“A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Barnstable, moving northeast at 55 mph” at about 6:26 p.m., the weather service said in the warning.

Those in the impacted area were instructed by the weather service to take cover.

“Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris,” the weather service said in the warning.

A severe thunderstorm warning expired at 6:45 p.m. for southwestern Barnstable and southeastern Plymouth counties, according to the weather service.

A marine warning issued until 7:45 p.m. for waterspouts, wind gusts up to 40 knots, and small hail extending along the eastern coast of the state, the Cape, and Islands has also expired.

Stormy weather forced the delay of at least one high school football game scheduled for south of Boston.

Foxborough and Wilmington were due to kick off at 6 p.m. at Ahern Middle School in Foxborough. But the game, part of the MIAA State Championships, was delayed due to lightning, a tornado warning, and then a power outage, the Foxborough High athletics account tweeted. But the game eventually got underway after 7 p.m.
