Containment of the Cameron Peak Fire grew to 38% by the Saturday morning assessment and to 40% by 8 p.m. Saturday.

The fire covers 125,715 acres, the Saturday evening report on Inciweb stated.

In a Saturday morning Facebook briefing, John Norton-Jensen, operations trainee for Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 6, said he expects additional containment in the next few days along the northeast side of the fire, where two “fingers” of burned area extend.

Relative humidity and moderate temperatures expected on Saturday were likely to help the fire team get good work done, he said.

Meanwhile the Mullen Fire, about 25 miles northwest of the Cameron Peak Fire, grew to 136,840 acres by Saturday evening, Operations Section Chief Trainee Deon Steinle said in a Facebook briefing.

That fire is 6% contained.

Keeping that fire from spreading toward the southeast and further into Colorado is a goal for fire managers there, deputy incident commander Bill Waln said, adding that he felt they just had to get through Sunday to meet that goal.

At the Cameron Peak Fire, fire managers are bracing for higher winds expected on Monday.

Wind gusts of 25-30 mph and low relative humidity are predicted for Monday. After that day, weather conditions are expected to improve, according to the fire management team.

Cause of the fire, which originated Aug. 13 near Cameron Pass and Chambers Lake, remains under investigation.
